Does more traffic give you a better search engine ranking?

Although this is a somewhat gray area, earch engines generally don’t reward a site based on traffic alone. If they did it would be very easy to write software that emulated searches 24/7 and clicked on your own site, thus boosting it to the top of the rankings. In fact it is the other way round, the higher your site ranks for a given search term the more traffic you will get for that search term.
This doesn’t ean o course that traffic is unimportant. it is just one of the validators that your site is both popular and reasonably well accepted. If you look at all the inormation Google analytics and other tools manage to capture about your traffic, the search engines could be making some value judgments.

This type of question frequently arises. Will some gadget or new and improved ‘thingy’ improve my search engine rankings?
The short answer is – by themselves – these things really won’t improve your search results. Gadgets, videos are all necessary parts of the presentation and if they make the site more valuable to the user, and if they improve the communication of the message, the widget or plug in might help.
Content is still king and content must be valuable. if a customized video player helps deliver value, then great. Otherwise, stick to creating unique and valuable content.

Is it possible to find out how my website is ranked for a specific keyword? And I mean for organic search results. I’d like to just enter a keyword and my url and get a ranking for Google, Yahoo, MSN, etc. Is it possible to find this out somewhere?

There are a couple options for you, but the simplest is the Rank Checker Tool from SEOBOOK. This is simple and instals as part of the SEOBOOK suite for Firefox. You can preprogram this to check multiple keywords without running each search yourself and then looking for your site. Just Google SEOBOOK, click on Tools and download the toolbar to your Firefox browser. You should be all set.

At least you’ve been indexed, so the engines know you are out there.
Submitting to relevant directories is extremely important for better placement. Make sure you are always linking in the exact same way (i.e. http://www.yoursite.com and http://yoursite.com) If your linking is inconsistent you may end up splitting your link juice and therfore your page rank. Make sure that whenever possible your link’s anchor text includes the keywords. Do a little research with the google keyword tool and find a search with some traffic. If you are not showing up on any searches right now either you are in an extremely competitive market or googlebot is probably having trouble with your site due to title or meta tag issues.

I know that link exchanges help a website’s ranking in search engines like Google, but does a banner exchange do the same? Because isn’t a link to your website technically on a different website, counting as a linkback? Or, because the banners are constantly rotated with other websites’ banners, it doesn’t count?

It doesn’t help your ranking. It does help the site that is advertising, especially if your site has a high PR. Reciprocal links don’t do much for your site anymore. If you want to increase your ranking fast, there is a step-by-step method I used to get my site to #1 on Google for a product I sell – and I can prove it. I wrote more about it on my blog below:

I’ve worked with SEM before but more on the ad-hoc reporting side as opposed to the analysis. I was curious to know how do people judge the success of specific keywords or keyword buckets?

Click Through Rate (CTR) Cost Per Click (CPC) Conversion Rate (CR) Cost Per Lead (CPL) Cost Per Sale (CPS) Cost Per Acquisition (CPA) Average Order Value (AVO) Finally the two that REALLY count !! Return on Investment (ROI) Return on Ad Spend (ROAS)
The real metric though is actual sales matched to web traffic the SEM effort generated. As the marketer, the ROI may be out of your control. Keep careful records in your SEM position though as all marketers eventually need to justify their budget and sometimes even their jobs. If you can point to a solid, written ROI and sales record, you are in much better shape than if you rely on memory.
