How to Construct a Blog Article Title

Blog titles are an important tool in attracting readers and traffic to your blog page.  Just as your main web page requires a descriptive but succinct title, each blog title requires the same.  As the search engine robots view your article for content, they look to the title to provide the description.  How do you construct an article title so as to attract traffic?  As you design your next business blog post, consider:

  • Is the title short but accurate?
  • Does the title incorporate keywords/phrases?
  • Is the title something that users would search for?

Accuracy:
Most sales people believe in having a ’30-second’ or ‘elevator pitch.’  This allows them to describe the product benefits in a very short period of time.  As listeners may only have a short attention span or have a few seconds to listen, this pitch has to be accurate, descriptive and short.

Carrying this logic through to titling your article, instead of 30 seconds, you only have a short set of words – not exceeding a total of 62 characters including blank spaces – to clearly communicate the content of your piece.   Search engines rely on this description of your content to represent to users on their results pages.

Keywords:
Incorporating keywords into the article title improves the likelihood that your page will be recognized by the search engines.  Of course the content has to include these keywords as well, but an opportunity to use keywords in the article title only increases page strength.  Be careful about overworking a phrase though, as an awkward keyword string in the title tag detracts from the value of the piece.  Search engine robots are not necessarily great judges of title and content grammar, but it doesn’t do any good to get an article well-placed on a results page only to appear clumsy to prospective readers.

Searchable Title: 

Many blog authors miss this little trick.   Before starting down the road writing your piece, consider what value you are trying to convey.  Better yet, what question are you attempting to answer?  Then title your piece with that question.  “How to” is a highly used search phrase, so if you are providing information on accomplishing some job or task, use the “how to build…” phrase in your title.  When users search for information on your subject, they will frequently preface their search with ‘how to.’  Search engines will then see your article as an exact match to what the user is searching for.
