SEO Consultants Denver – Quick Keyword Guidelines

Occasionally, SEO Consultants Denver receives questions regarding search engine strategies and SEM issues.  This topic comes up frequently.

Keywords are of course extremely important to one’s SEO efforts.  However, even some of the best keyword strategists – after developing a plan they would bet their house on – have had to scrap it soon after launch. How do you avoid this?  Well… the short answer is that you probably don’t.

Setting useful keywords involves a great deal of advanced research, but also includes ongoing measurement and if necessary – ‘in flight’ modification.  One can’t be ‘married’ to a set of preferred keywords.  If the ones you chose aren’t generating the results you want, then move on! Error, Trial and Error is frequently the process used to find keywords that produce results.

Effective keywords are often the result of consumer search behavior as much as search engine processing.  As we all understand, consumer behavior is a fickle and volatile field.  So hitting the right keywords can be a combination of luck and strategy. 

The quick guideline then involves five steps of keyword management.

Research:  To set your keywords, you have to start somewhere.  Research your keywords using multiple selection and suggestion tools to get the best opportunity for good representation on the search engines.  It never hurts to have a couple in mind when you finally boil your list down to a handful of useful and relatively open keywords or keyword phrases. Try words that describe your product/service value and not necessarily the name of the product.  Be creative!

Testing:  Run searches using your hypothetical keywords to see what results the engines prouce.  If the resulting search results turn out to be fairly weak pages in terms of page rank or viewer activity, this might be a good area to focus on.  After all, it does you no good to have a great page, a great offer and not be able to crack the top 20 because all your competitor pages are too strong for an upstart like yours.

Selection:  So pick ‘em already!  Some folks waste huge amounts of time in over-analyzing keyword and keyword phrases.  Take a shot at the keywords that you think will not only generate the viewer exposures you want, but will attract the right kind of reader that is appropriate to the information you present.  If possible, consider setting up several pages to see what works best. Setting up multiple pages for the purpose of trying different keyword strategies can be useful.  However, be careful to make each page unique.  Search engines frown on duplicate content – especially within the same URL environment.

Evaluation:  Keep track of what is happening.  Watch your search engine placement and keep testing the keyword searches you want to appear on.  Look at your competitors.  Are they changing their pages?  If so, how often?  Really look at how your competitors are using their web presence to target what they think will work best for them. 

Modification:  Watch your referral systems carefully to see what activity you get.  This may take a few weeks to get a proper evaluation, but if you are not receiving the right referrals or traffic, keep observing and modify your pages according to what your competitors seem to  be doing. 

Patience is a virtue, but don’t be afraid to call a loser a loser.  Additionally certain keywords may work great one week and totally fail the next – especially if you are pumping out current event-related material such as fashion or trend topics.  The more you can monitor your pages, the better equipped you will be to make the quick changes necessary to overcome any hurdles.
