Best ways to improve search engine ranking?

SEO Question that came in the beginning of this week.  These type of general questions arise a lot!

“I would like to generate a steady stream of visitors to my website/blog. What is the best way to do this?”

You have a couple options here:  You can:

  • blog for the traffic,
  • buy the traffic, or
  • get traffic from the search engines.

Each one of these requires some significant effort – especially when you are first starting out. Initially, your site has no credibility with the search engines. 

Blogging – As the search robots can take several weeks to index and categorize your site so that yours will show up on search engine results, you may want to start inviting others to visit your site by visiting their blogs and commenting.  Each blog entry you make may also serve as a useful back-link as well. The short answer is that you should do some blogging every day no matter what ultimate strategy you choose to drive traffic to your site.

Pay Per Click – Buying the traffic via a PPC may be done fairly inexpensively if you are willing to undertake the research to find useful keywords and keyword phrases that won’t cost you an arm and a leg to compete for.  Still, this is real money out the door, but it does work.

SEO – The ‘Nirvana’ answer to the question is to get your website or blog highly placed on common search engine results.  These are generally termed ‘organic’ results.  Organic results are highy trusted by viewers looking for information on your topic.  However, properly arranging your page and blog to attract search engine attention and then become highly placed is a significant undertaking itself.  

To earn traffic from the search engines does require significant effort and expertise.  And when you get it all right, the search engines may suddenly just change their methodology!  So SEO is a constantly changing field.
