SEO Consultants Denver discuss Using Social Networks to Drive Traffic

I’ve been asked this more lately, so it seemed worth preparing a short post.  The question surrounds the importance of social networking – Facebook, Twitter, etc., in driving viewers to a site or blog.

The short answer is that these networks can be highly useful tools in attracting new traffic.  A blog or site owner though, should be very careful in how he/she applies the technology. Here are a couple well-discussed and common rules of thumb that are frequently overlooked:

Value:

Social networking for business purposes requires a high level of respect for your viewer’s time.  A viewer may be lured to your site by a Facebook note or ‘Tweet,’ but if there is no unique element of value when your page appears, they will be highly unlikely to revisit your page without a good reason.  Remember that you are establishing trust with your readers that when you invite them to a page, there will be a good reason for them to do so. 

Provide a reason up front:

When you notify your community using a social network that there is a reson to visit the page, make sure the viewer understands what that reason is.  If the viewer/reader is interested in your short ‘value proposition,’ he/she is likely to click the link.  It is alright if the viewer doesn’t click the link though, because if they don’t have the need for the information or item of value this time, they might have a different need the next time you send out a notice of some new value.

Over Use:

As it is possible to generate decent traffic from social site referrals, make sure you don’t overuse social media.  Like the story of ‘The Boy Who Cried Wolf,’ it is easy to cause your community to lose trust in your content if they are getting a communication from you each hour.  So carefully limit your use of social media to what is appropriate and important from the standpoint of your readers.
