Question:
Is there a way to learn SEO for free? I get swamped with SEO offers for my furniture business and don’t want to pay and pay to keep learning the next greatest trend
Reply:
It is possible to learn SEO for free, but it requires quite a bit of your time. It isn’t quick.
You might start by reading (apologies for not rememberin the author names):
- Designing with Web Standards
- Don’t make me think
There should be updated editions of these out now
Then look for some free web based tutorials There are several of these out there now and many if not most will try to sell their services in the end. You just have to read through them and work through the exercises to pick it up.
The real effort though comes in the error, trial and error process. Local search is fairly dependent on what the local competition throws into the engines. You must continually look at what your competitors are doing that appears successful and then modify your page to compete. You will figure it out if you stay with it.
You can do it for free no problem but it will require a little time on your part.
First you need to get two books from the library:
Designing with Web Standards http://www.zeldman.com/dwws/
Don’t make me think http://www.sensible.com/buythebook.html
Reading and understanding these two books alone will put you ahead of 99.9% of webdesigners.
Then you need to read a free, reliable and up to date SEO tutorial. There are only two of these on the web that are considered worth reading.

That’s it! Read, learn and implement.
Good luck!

Reading books is good, and absolutely a great way to "start" your research, but even a book released this week was written 4 to 8 months ago, perhaps based on research from a year or two ago.
You will find more current information online, for free. Try to evaluate online resources carefully, and avoid those that are designed to "sell" you something.
As noted, Search Engine Optimization is one of the cheapest and most effective strategies to build traffic. Other methods include PPC Search (Google AdWords and others, which cost money and can be expensive if you aren’t very focused on your goals) and affiliate marketing (paying other web sites a commission on sales to customers they send you).
Some good places to start doing research (read, don’t post right away):
