How Important is Blogging to Your SEO Campaign?

The answer depends upon the nature of your business, your competition and the positioning of your competitor’s pages. If the objective is to get into the top few Google or Yahoo search results for searches within your industry niche, blogging can be an extremely valuable addition to your overall web strategy.

A relevant blog should provide useful information regarding your industry or business.  With a little effort, you can attract readers to your blog – some of which will be potential buyers.  From that standpoint, blogging is a great way to establish yourself in your industry by providing useful information on a regular basis.

A blog is also an opportunity to offer your expertise, advice and to establish yourself as an industry expert.  Remember though that a blog is an invitation to an exchange of ideas and information.  You will not always offer a popular point of view and must react positively to contrary opinions.  

How much information should I share?

You want to be careful about giving away trade secrets of course or sharing too much about the uniqueness of your business offering.  As you have seen your competitors on line, they are certain to see your page and read your information as well.  Still, focus your writings on results achieved and when possible, share case studies to convey the value of what you provide.  Also, avoid negative comments about competitors.  That just makes you a little less trustworthy to folks that don’t know you.

What if I am not a great writer?

This question actually has two parts – quality and volume.  One doesn’t need to post a great deal of information on the blog, but what is there should be useful and valuable.  As far as volume, one should post every few days at least.  If all else fails, you can contact your college-aged son who aced Freshman English and have him compose a few posts for you.  There is no disgrace in farming out some of the composition.

Absolutely!  This is a must.  You need to be a part of the web community to start attracting readers.  And make sure you comment on the information presented there.  Buyers and potential customers also read the comments and if you have something valuable to offer, they may click on your link back to your blog.

There are several programs available that allow you to easily set up and manage your blog.  Blogspot, Blogger and WordPress are excellent options.  Within an hour or so, you can have your blog page set up and begin working with it.  If you have your own domain, this is free.
