More Backlinks – SEO Denver

Gathering backlinks is a very major key to achieving better page rank and better placement on the big search engines.  Depending upon how one views the effort, this can be a good or bad thinkg.

Getting your page indexed and placed well on these results pages because you have a number of good relationships in your industry niche is the ultimate sign of strength.   And the search engines will reward you for it.  The downside:  these can be very difficult and time consuming to acquire.

There are a couple of link building strategies and techniques that have emerged that are worth discussing.  Some of these have value while others are a waste of your time and money.   There are three main methodologies to acquire links.  The last one listed – Organic Links – is a huge topic by itself, including link trading, link  baiting, blogging,  press releases and article submission.  For now, let’s stick to discussing the value of these efforts. 

Three major types of link building methodologies are:

  • Link submission engines
  • Paid link listing
  • Organic links

Link Submission Engines:

Generally speaking, these are a complete waste of time and money.  Just to be fair,   I’ve tried several of these for SEO Denver,  spent a few dollars to try them out and achieved no appreciable improvement in the number of external links pointing to the main SEO Denver site.  There are several inexpensive submission engines available, but at least from personal experience, these only drain your bank account – even if by only a little bit. 

If you are tempted to try one of these, a 30-day free trial is insufficient to get a feel for whether or not this will work for your site.  Push the organizer for at least 120 days.   Google has been taking several weeks to catalogue these links and give you proper credit for them.  Yahoo! is quite a bit more liberal about link credit, but extends that policy to your competitors, so even though you get more links that Yahoo! recognizes, that search engine is recognizing a whole bunch for your competitors as well.  In the end though, don’t get your hopes up for using link submission engines. 

Paid Links:

Several link farms now charge a modest fee for listing your site among the several thousand others they link to.  Google recognizes some of these, but it will be interesting to see how long they continue to do so.  Google typically prefers the standard, earned and organic backlinks to ones that are bought and paid for.  On top of that, the Google egalitarian philosophy holds that all should have an opportunity to compete for business.  Buying a  bunch of backlinks skews the business and search landscape to favor wealthier organizations.  Google offers PPC and wants to be the one earning income from search, so it will be very interesting to see if they continue to weight links on paid link farms quite as heavily in the future.  For now, one or two paid links if placed on relevant niche sites probably won’t do too much damage.

Organic Links:

Clearly the favorite of the search engines, builing links through relationships in a given industry are weighted the most.  These are then the types of links that you should be pursing to build your web strength.   As noted earlier, there are numerous way of building organic links, but all take some time and at their core, involve building relationships with those in your industry or niche community. 

Unfortunately for most entrepreneurs who are responsible for everything from sales an marketing to making coffee in the morning, acquiring organic backlinks takes a huge time commitment.  The only real way around this is to hire it done.  Occasionally, there is someone in your organization that might show some interest in managing a link building program.  Just make sure that the person assigned is either a ’subject matter expert’ – SME – or has the ability to speak intelligently about your company and your industry.

How Frequently Should Page Content be Updated?

Although there is no hard and fast rule to how often you need to upgrade or ‘freshen-up’ your web page, suffice it to say that a site operator must keep the site current and updated.

There are three major reasons to update individual page content:

  • refresh keywords and keyword phrases,
  • tell the search engines that yours is an active site, and
  • expand content

Keep in mind that each page is indexed separately.  Each page – not just your main landing page – should be upgraded and ”freshened-up’ from time to time as search engines can return individual pages within your site as a search result link. So upgrading and updating each page increases the chances for it to appear as a search engine result.

Keywords:

Once sites are launched and move up in the rankings, there usually occurs a plateau or ceiling beyond which the site won’t advance.  At this point, it is worth re-examining all elements of each page including title, text and links.  Re-setting these elements of your page with special attention to keywords and keyword phrases is frequently the only way to keep the page advancing.

When rewriting or updating a page, be sure to check all links to make sure they aren’t pointed to a dead space.  Use keywords and keyword phrases in the body of the text and in your headlines where appropriate, but remember that ‘keyword stuffing’ or overuse of particular keywords and phrases may actually decrease your page ranking.  A good rule of thumb is to write conversationally – as if you were giving an informal presentation on your topic.

Each page should be updated in this fashion.  It can become tiresome to rewrite each page or find new ways to restate the content.  Based on your experience since you composed the text though, you may have identified additional bits of value to include.  A page re-write provides a regular opportunity to increase the value of each page.

Active Sites:

If a user hit your site a couple months ago and then again this morning, would the content be the same?  If so, what would he/she wonder?  Is the business still in operation?  Is there anything new about the business?  Customers that revisit a site are usually seeking new information. If there is nothing new, one risks losing their attention to another site.

In their travels through the web world, search engine robots are essentially looking for the same thing – new and updated content.  Pages that appear stale or go unmodified for extended periods of time may be viewed less favorably.  When updating your individual pages, provide a little extra value than was there previously.

Expanding Content:

Increasing the value o each page during your rewrite might easily imply expanding each page. Adding content or expanding the bulk of the page can be helpful, but so can adding a new page to your entire environment.  In the end, you may find that updating your entire site might involve addition of new pages dedicated to other topics.  Separating topics into new pages also allows you to set unique keywords and title tags and ultimately focus the page so that the search engine robots can understand the content.

Expanding content is a good thing when there is value to the included material.  Whether expanding a page or setting up an entirely new page, adding value to a site is always a useful endeavor and when done with proper keyword planning and composition, can attract additional traffic.

Upgading and rewriting pages may be difficult and time consuming, but to keep your page advancing in the SEO game, it is necessary to carefully monitor your site and continually add value.  Over time, your page my even become the ‘go to’ site for your niche!
